Metro cops in court for murder

Four people, including two Ekurhuleni Metro police officers, appeared in the Delmas magistrate's court yesterday for allegedly killing a man by pouring acid over him.

Four people, including two Ekurhuleni Metro police officers, appeared in the Delmas magistrate's court yesterday for allegedly killing a man by pouring acid over him.

They were denied bail and their case was postponed until further notice. Metro police officials Phumxile Choepape, 28, and Charles Mnguni, 34, were out of their jurisdiction area when the incident occurred in December last year. They allegedly poured acid over David Mokhonjwa, 40, at his home in Sundra, Mpumalanga, after receiving a tip-off that he might have stolen copper wire.

The two officers were accompanied by their friends, Gugu Msibi, 32, and Khanyate Mekoa, 35, a former soldier.

All four were appearing in court for the third time on charges of murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

"The Metro policemen, who did not even have the authority to deal with the case, went to Mokhonjwa's house with their two friends. They wanted more information to find more suspects. When Mokhonjwa couldn't tell them anything, they allegedly poured acid over him," said police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane. - Sapa
