Friends, family and the music fraternity yesterday remembered the late maskandi singer, Ikhansela, in a highly emotional memorial service at Hillbrow Assemblies of God Church.

Born Mfihleni Rolland Mkhize, the singer died last Thursday after a long illness.

Speakers praised the maskandi muso for his outstanding composing and vocal skills. Mkhize was famously known for his spiritual music that touched a lot of people. His song titled Izwi earned him respect among his peers, as well as his fans.

It was an emotional send-off. One of his songs Ningakhali Bantabam was played by his band. In the song Mkhize prophesied his own death. Also, in Ingadlangadla the singer pleads with his children not to cry when he dies.

Pat Sibeko, a photojournalist, described Mkhize as a hero.

"Unlike many musicians, Mkhize was very open about his illness. It's a pity we could not help him."

Deborah Fraser, who spoke on behalf of musicians, said: "Mkhize was a very humble person who respected everyone. We will miss his unique skills."

CCP/EMI manager Orrack Chabangu said Mkhize knew he was going to die.

"After recording his album Ingadlangadla he came to me with the CD. We were very touched by his lyrics. We could tell that there was something unusual about the album."
