ALGIERS - A suicide bomber rammed a car into a police station in Naciria, about 120km east of Algiers, yesterday, witnesses said, and the Interior Ministry said three people had been killed.

"There has been an attack with explosives near a police station in Naciria. The attack left three dead and seven wounded," the ministry said. It gave no further details.

It was the first major attack in Algeria since a twin bombing in the capital Algiers killed at least 37 people on December 11, including 17 UN staff members.

An al-Qaeda wing in North Africa claimed responsibility for that attack, which hit UN offices and a court building, saying it had targeted "the slaves of America and France". - Reuters
