A Limpopo man allegedly committed suicide upon hearing that police were hot on his heels for the alleged rape and strangling of a 17-year-old girl.
Victor Phasha, 19, was to become the third suspect to be charged with the rape and murder of Kamogelo Kgabisa, whose body was discovered by police in the bushes in Mohlaletse village in the Sekhukhune area on Monday.
Kgabisa had gone missing for three days until the gruesome discovery. She was found to have been raped before being strangled to death.
Police have since arrested two suspects in connection with the incident which has sent shockwaves in the Sekhukhune community.
The second suspect was arrested at his home in the village while the first was arrested soon after the discovery of the victim's body. They all stayed in the same village, according to police.
Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said Phasha had allegedly received a tip-off that police were on his trail and decided to take his own life.
"Phasha was found hanging from the roof of his room on Tuesday afternoon," Ramatseba said.
"He [Phasha] used a rope to tie [around] his neck before hanging himself," said Ramatseba.
An inquest docket has since been opened in relation to Phasha's alleged suicide.
The other suspects, both aged 17, are expected to appear in the Sekhukhune magistrate's court today.
Investigations are continuing, Ramatseba said.
"We want to discourage the youth from engaging in any criminal activity as doing so will have a detrimental effect on their future ambitions," he said.
