Nigeria defender Onyekachi Apam was abducted by unknown gunmen in Enugu on Sunday.
His car was stolen while he was held at gunpoint.
Apam was later released by the three robbers.
He told Nigeria's Kick Off magazine that he was on his way home from church.
"They forced me to lie down at the back of the car and then they drove off," he said.
"I just thank God that I was not harmed in any way."
Apam is part of the Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), and a key member of the country's team for the 2008 Olympics.
He plays his club football in France for Nice.
Last June, another Super eagles and Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins escaped uninjured after he was shot at while driving in Lagos.
