Don't eat fish found dead.

This warning was issued by the Limpopo department of water affairs and forestry yesterday to communities in and around the Flag Boshielo Dam, near Marble Hall, after dead fish was found in the dam.

About 10 fish were found floating in the dam, raising suspicion that they might have been poisoned.

Provincial department spokesman Leah Matlala said most of the dams in the province are overflowing and it is not known whether the fish were poisoned or died on hitting the dam wall.

"We can't speculate on what caused their death but we suspect the fish died on hitting the dam wall while going down with the overflowing water."

Matlala said the discovery was made after a tip-off from the public that people were seen selling fish in the area.

"We call on communities to not to eat or sell fish either caught or found dead at the dam until further notice," Matlala said.

"Those who ignore this should realise that they are endangering other people's lives."

Matlala said further investigations will be conducted.

According to her no similar incidents have been reported in other areas where dams are also overflowing.
