High praise for Wade

One of the three white soccer players who made their first appearance in the off-season games in Vosloorus has become an instant hero.

The trio made a surprise appearance for local team Rockville United, who took part in the annual Diski Nine Nine tournament at a dusty ground.

They endeared themselves to the thousands of soccer fans who filled the ground to capacity for almost the entire tournament.

But it was Wade Marshall who caught the eye because of his incredible goal-scoring prowess.

The well-built striker from Benoni shook the net four times in four games and his predatory instinct immediately earned him the nicknane "The Fox".

His striking prowess brought back memories of former greats like former Kaizer Chiefs striker Samora Khulu.

If Marshall continues hitting the net at his current team, BK Callies, who are campaigning in the Vodacom League, he could draw attention from the national coach of the Under-23 squad.

In United's games, referees struggled to restart the match as the excited crowds rushed onto the pitch to mob Marshall whenever he scored.

The 22-year-old told Sowetan that he enjoyed the good atmosphere in the township. He also praised participants and supporters for their sportsmanship.

Unfortunately, his team was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Mambas, who beat United 2-1 in an exciting game.

The other white guest players were Michael Carrol and Warren Vougal, both of Watford Seams FC.

Vougal formed a solid defence with a resolute Junior Bilankulu, who plays for Lamontville Golden Arrows.
