Fewer pupils passed matric this year than last year.

For the second year in a row, Sowetan can confirm that the pass rate had dropped, this time by about 4percent.

Last year 66,6percent passed while 68,3 went through the previous year.

This year, the figure dropped to about 61percent despite promises of an improvement by Education Minister Naledi Pandor.

Experts had predicted the drop in the pass rate because of the strike by teachers which started in May.
