A 12-year-old boy who survived a horror car crash that claimed seven lives, including that of a three-month-old baby, is in a critical condition in a Mpumalanga hospital.

The unidentified boy was admitted to Middelburg Provincial Hospital on Monday afternoon.

This was after an accident involving the car in which he was travelling with four other people, and a minibus taxi.

It happened on the N4 highway in Middelburg. Three people in the minibus taxi and four in the car were killed.

The investigating officer in the case, Inspector Louna Cason, said yesterday that the boy was later transferred from an ordinary to a high-care ward because of his serious condition.

He said that according to hospital staff, the boy sustained a swollen brain, therefore, needed higher care.

Captain Leonard Hlathi, of the Mpumalanga organised crime unit, said the dead were yet to be identified.

The car was travelling from the direction of Middelburg towards Nelspruit. It was allegedly making a U-turn on the Hendrina off-ramp when the taxi crashed into it, killing four of its occupants instantly. Two male occupants in the minibus, including the boy. also died instantly.
