Naomi Zondo is still grieving over her daughter's death but has now been caught up in a sinister battle with the girl's boyfriend, who wants to marry her even when she is in the grave.
Amanda Zondo, of Diepkloof, Soweto, died on November 19. She left behind her boyfriend, Itumeleng Moalusi, and a three-year-old daughter.
Two days after the funeral on November 25, Moalusi fetched his daughter to live with him at his home in Diepkloof.
"He has not given us a chance to see the child since then," Zondo says.
She says Moalusi took Amanda's uncle Isaac Mokhanyane and went with him to the Johannesburg Home Affairs offices in an attempt to marry her dead daughter.
But officials at the department told him to consult Zondo's family about the matter.
In 2004 he paid a portion of the ilobolo when Amanda was still pregnant.
"They promised to pay the rest of the money later but nothing happened until my daughter died," Zondo says.
Amanda died while she was living with Moalusi.
"I am very upset that Moalusi decided not to come to me but went to Home Affairs to do such a thing," Zondo says.
Moalusi says: "I just wanted to ensure that my daughter has my surname. I will send my elders to the Zondo family to discuss the matter with them."
Home Affairs spokesman Jackie Mashapu says: "The law states that two people getting married need to be present before a marriage officer for the marriage to take place."
