The late Gift Leremi's mother insists that her daughter-in-law is legitimately wearing the black mourning dress for her late husband with her blessings.
Leremi's mother, Mmabatho Matsemela, was commenting on rumours that Mamello Ralematha was wearing the mourning dress of her own accord and therefore illegitimately.
Ralematha is the mother of Leremi's two daughters, aged three and one.
"Mamello is Mrs Leremi legally andI am the one who put on her mourning dress," Matsemela says.
On Sunday Sowetan's sister newspaper, Sunday World, reported that Leremi's father, Robbie, was fuming after Ralematha and Matsemela snubbed the star's cleansing ceremony in Klipspruit, Soweto, recently.
Leremi died in a car accident in September.
The newspaper quoted Robbie as saying the Leremi family did not recognise Ralematha as "makoti wa rona" - our daughter-in-law.
Robbie Leremi accused the two women of confusing the children whom he said needed an identity.
"In our culture the children are cleansed from the father's side."
Ralematha tells Sowetan: "Everything was done according to tradition. My children also went through a cleansing ceremony last week."
