Bungling cops still looking for clues

After shoddy policing led to his escape two months ago a confessed child rapist is still on the run.

The man had just told a magistrate he had kidnapped and raped a six-year-old for two days when he vanished from the court holding cells.

Two officers were suspended for allegedly assisting 26-year-old Paul Mofokeng, who is masquerading as Vusi Zwane, to escape.

But they are back at work after the case against them was thrown out of court because of a lack of evidence.

While police have no clue about Mofokeng's whereabouts, the mother of the child is worried that the beast might come back to finish them off.

In another bungle, the cops have failed to provide shelter for the child.

Mofokeng kidnapped the child on August 19 and dropped her off at the gate of her home on August 21 at about 3am. The child lives in a shack in Mofolo, Soweto, not far from Mofokeng's place.

Mofokeng was arrested a week later and appeared at the Protea magistrate's court on November 15, where he made a dash for it.

Jabulani police spokesman Inspector Kay Makhubela said yesterday the task team formed to find Mofokeng still has no information.

The scarred girl is still receiving treatment for her injuries and is due for an operation next month.

Mofokeng's case was postponed to December 28.
