A DA councillor in Ekurhuleni allegedly found it cheaper to hire a hitman than pay back a R90000 loan to a moneylender.
Councillor Kiliwe Mlilwana conceded she ran into arrears but denied hiring the hitman. She said she had been trying to raise the money to pay back the loan.
"I have not paid anyone to kill anyone," she said. "I will sue Sowetan and the people who are telling you this.
"I am trying to be a good person. I am a human being."
Sowetan has seen SMSes sent by the alleged killer to the moneylender.
"Hi Mr Boss, this is for your information," said an SMS from Cobra, the alleged hitman. "A woman came to us and gave us big money that we should kill you.
"She gave us your everything, your car registration number and your office address.
"I want to ask you, do you want to die before next week or you give us money. And don't tell anyone, not even the police."
Mlilwana denied knowing anyone by that name.
She allegedly approached a businessman to help her pay the arrears on her bond.
Bank transactions show that R90000 was paid into her account when she experienced financial difficulties. Mlilwana conceded that she had borrowed money.
The Gauteng DA said if the allegations were true, she could not continue being a councillor.
"We will investigate the matter," said party spokesman Manny de Freitas.
