It is only seven days to go before matric results for 2007 are announced and for the more than 90000 candidates who sat for the examinations nationwide to know their fate.

But there is uncertainty on whether the pupils of Fezeka Secondary School in Gugulethu, Cape Town, who allegedly cheated during the Afrikaans second language paper and the economics paper will get their results.

Brian Schreuder, Western Cape education department deputy director of communications, said the issue was complicated because certain pupils had allegedly been implicated in the cheating scandal.

"The examination board will decide on whether to release their results or not. It is likely that some candidates may not receive their results, but I cannot give a definite figure," Schreuder said.

He said the people who invigilated at those examination sittings had had their salaries blocked, and that the acting principal of the school where the pupils allegedly cheated had also been suspended.

Sowetan will carry the complete national matric results on Friday, December 28.
