Police in Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast suspect that Delani Kusi - one of three people who was burnt to death at a house - might have started the fire.
Kusi, 39, shared the house with his girlfriend and a stepdaughter. On Tuesday morning Kusi, his girlfriend Gugu Mkhize, 38, and stepdaughter Ntsiki Mkhize, 13, perished in a fire after being trapped in the family bedroom.
Police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum said the bedroom was completely gutted. He said a woman who shared the house with the deceased was still too traumatised to speak.
Pandarum said petrol was apparently used in the fire.
"We are investigating the allegation that Kusi, who was Gugu Mkhize's boyfriend, had quarrelled with her earlier on and was responsible for setting the house alight in the early hours of the morning with petrol," said Pandarum.
He said their bodies were found on the bedroom floor. Emergency workers had tried in vain to force their way into the burning home.
