A man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend yesterday appeared briefly in the Johannesburg magistrate's court.
Stephen Nkgadime, 30, who lives in Johannesburg but has no fixed address, was arrested last week. He has been charged with the murder of his seven-month-pregnant girlfriend Mpho Kgaje of Yeoville, Johannesburg.
Nkgadime planned to apply for bail, but his lawyer failed to arrive for court proceedings.
Nkgadime was the last person to be seen with Kgaje.
He told Sowetan in July that they had been hijacked.
"We were outside Mpho's home when two men approached us. One pulled out a gun and forced me to sit in the back seat. I tried to hold the gun but he fired a shot that hit me in the arm and the bullet hit Mpho in the head."
He said the hijackers drove them to a deserted spot in Crown Gardens, near Ormonde, where they were dumped.
But Nkgadime was arrested after months of investigation and charged with his girlfriend's murder.
The bail application was postponed to January 8.
