A six-year-old boy is receiving trauma counselling after witnessing his father shoot his mother in cold blood before turning the gun on himself at the boy's grandparents' home in Umlazi township on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital and would face charges of murder should he survive.

The man, who cannot be named until he appears in court, shot his girlfriend in cold blood in a fit of jealousy before shooting himself in the chin. The bullet exited his body through his back.

His girlfriend, Nonkululeko Mthembu, 28, of N-section in Umlazi, had allegedly tried to plead with him to calm down, trying to convince him that she had not been cheating on him.

All hell broke loose as the suspect became furious and accused Mthembu of cheating, claiming she was seeing another man from Isipingo, south of Durban, behind his back, said an eye-witness who refused to be named.

"He pulled out his gun and shot Mthembu in the stomach, when she tried to flee, he fired another shot into her back," the witness said.

The suspect allegedly stormed Mthembu's family home just after 7pm.

According to the police, the incident happened shortly after 7pm when the couple "had had a heated argument".

"During the argument the suspect shot Mthembu twice before turning the gun on himself," confirmed police spokesman Khephu Ndlovu.

Ndlovu said police and paramedics were called to the scene and rushed the two to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.

Mthembu was certified dead on arrival at the hospital.

The suspect is under police guard in a serious condition in hospital.

Ndlovu added that the suspect had subsequently been charged with murder.

"He has been charged with murder. He is currently under guard in hospital.

"He will appear in court as soon as he is fit," Ndlovu said.

Police found a 9mm pistol and five unused bullets at the scene.
