A senior traffic officer in the Albert Luthuli Municipality in Mpumalanga has been arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl.
Superintendent Brian Masina, 37, of Carolina handed himself over to the Carolina police yesterday morning after police could not find him at his house on Sunday.
The rape in question allegedly took place at Selobela township, Carolina, after the victim went missing from home.
Constable Kedibone Mahloko of Carolina police confirmed the arrest saying after the rape case was opened on Sunday, police visited Masina's home and were told that he was away in Johannesburg.
A note requesting him to report to the local police station on his return was left at the house. "Yesterday morning, he came to the police station where he was charged with rape. He appeared before a local magistrate," Mahloko said.
Magistrate RM Chirwa postponed the case to December 28 to allow him an opportunity to find a legal representative and for bail application.
He was remanded in custody.
Sources close to the victim's family said she disappeared from home on Sunday and the family started searching for her.
They were told that she was last seen in the company of the traffic officer.
The sources said after they found and questioned her, she told them what had happened to her.
The matter was then reported to the police on the same day.
Sources close to the police told Sowetan that the officer claimed he had a relationship with the girl.
Spokesman for the Albert Luthuli Municipality, Walter Mngomezulu, who is currently attending the ANC conference in Polokwane, Limpopo, said he was not aware of the arrest.
He referred Sowetan to the municipality's traffic department where he (Masina) was said to be on leave.
