Evicted residents protest

A memorandum of grievances by evicted residents of municipal rental homes in Rustenburg, North West, was handed to the municipality yesterday, AfriForum said.

A memorandum of grievances by evicted residents of municipal rental homes in Rustenburg, North West, was handed to the municipality yesterday, AfriForum said.

Spokesman Kallie Kriel said the memorandum was delivered by protesting members of AfriForum - a civil rights group set up by trade union Solidarity - and the residents.

The protest followed the eviction of 23 families by the muni- cipality without offering them alternative housing.

"We demand that the muni- cipality must keep its promise by making affordable accommodation available to the evicted residents," said Kriel.

He said a shack had been built in front of the municipal offices in protest against the two-month old evictions from Geelhoutpark.

Municipal spokesman Butler Matlapeng said: "The municipa- lity received a document for the executive mayor but I don't know its contents.

"They challenged the evictions in court last week but they lost," he said.

He added that the municipality was "not obliged" to provide alternative accommodation though it had tried to negotiate payment plans with the residents. - Sapa
