Takalani Home for the Mentally Disabled in Soweto got its early Christmas lollies last Thursday when it received a donation of R1million from the National Lotteries Board.
The home will receive the last instalment of the R1million from the Lotteries Board early next year.
Donations started pouring in after Lynne van Rooyen, the director at Takalani, spoke about their plight on SABC2's Morning Live programme last month.
A delighted Van Rooyen said Takalani has financially experienced a very stormy year thus far, "however, Morning Live came to our rescue".
Rashid Janjat of Albaraka Bank donated R50000 while Shoprite Checkers Gauteng head office and their suppliers have pledged to donate R750000 worth of groceries.
The handover was to take place at Takalani Home today.
David Mabunda, of the Kruger National Park, offered the home's residents a three-day stay at the park.
Takalani also received two vehicles, an Isuzu Bakkie from Ronnie Sutherland and a minibus from Ellen Herseman. One female donor, who wanted to remain anonymous, decided that once she passed on, Takalani will inherit her estate.
Takalani Home was founded in 1989 by Dr Nthato Motlana.
It was largely because of his efforts and persistence that the Anglo American Chairman's Fund and the De Beers Chairman's Fund contributed R7,6million towards the building of this institution.
Takalani currently caters for the physical, mental and spiritual needs of 400 people aged between 3 and 60 years.
Van Rooyen said the National Lotteries Board made the next biggest financial donation ever since Anglo American and De Beer's initial "set-up".
