South African construction and engineering business Group Five has been awarded a $62million (about R430million) contract to design, supply and install a gas power station in Nigeria's Abia State.
The power plant is located in Aba, the commercial capital city of Abia State in south-eastern Nigeria, directly north of the Akwa Ibom state in the Niger Delta.
The client is Geometric Power Limited, a local private-sector driven power provider in Nigeria, which constructs and operates independent power plants for the generation, transmission and distribution of power to industrial clusters, commercial entities and the public.
The project started in October and will be completed in December next year.
Group Five's Engineering business has secured over R1,5 billion's worth of power and energy contracts over the past three years.
The Aba power station is Group Five's second power project in the independent African power market.
The project follows the group's successful execution of the first stage of the 2005 $90million contract for a new power station in the Akwa Ibom state of Nigeria.
Group Five chief executive, Mike Upton, said: "This contract cements our successful entry into the independent African power market and proves the success of our West African business, a region we have worked in since 1995." - I-Net Bridge
