A high-powered delegation of senior traffic officers has been dispatched to the University of Limpopo's Turfloop campus to man the road when the ANC national conference kicks off at the weekend.
The delegation comprises senior managers and superintendents. They will work together with the SANDF to provide security.
Spokesman Boiki Tsedu said his department will increase the number of traffic officers to over 100 to work in and around Mankweng, near Turfloop.
A total of 84 traffic officers from the province and 42 from municipalities will be dispatched to the venue, he said.
About 4000 ANC delegates are expected to gather for the conference that will last a week - from December 15 to 20.
"The department would establish four joint operation centres to monitor traffic, and together with the SANDF, escort senior ANC officials to and from the conference," Tsedu said.
The department has also warned motorists who would be travelling to Boyne in Moria for religious pilgrimages during the festive season, to obey traffic rules and signs at all times.
Motlafela Mojapelo, senior spokesman for the police in Limpopo, said they had dispatched more than 1000 police officers in and around Polokwane.
"We have declared Mankweng a gun-free zone," he said.
The ANC said the university is ready for the conference.
By yesterday afternoon some delegates already descended on Limpopo for the conference.
An ANC provincial spokesman said some delegates will be accommodated on the Turfloop campus while others will stay in surrounding lodges and hotels.
