Angry SABC radio listeners vented their anger at Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi for making sexist remarks against women.
Calling into Xolani Gwala's show on SAFM yesterday, the listeners, mostly ANC members, lashed out at Vavi, saying he undermined women and the ANC membership with his remarks.
Vavi at the weekend accused ministers in the Mbeki camp of promoting the 50-50 female-male representation because they were "opportunists" and "legendary womanisers".
The ANC national executive committee had asked Vavi to retract the statement and apologise, but he refused to do so.
Nqaba, calling from Port Elizabeth, said Vavi's statement was a challenge to all.
"He repeats this on radio. He intentionally undermined the contribution women and men made to the liberation struggle."
Another caller from King William's Town accused Vavi of "verbal diarrhoea".
Thandi from Johannesburg challenged Vavi to go out and see how women had progressed in business and other fields without offering any sexual favours.
"What he said is an insult to women and their integrity," she said.
Only one listener came to Vavi's defence.
The Cape Town-based man said Vavi's statement was distorted by the media.
