DJ Sbu pulled a Louis Hamilton, British Formula One driver, on the N1 on Sunday when he clocked 257km/h on a 120km zone.
He was driving a sponsored Audi TT.
The popular TV presenter, real name Sbusiso Leope, pleaded guilty to charges of speeding, metro police said yesterday.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said he was told by a prosecutor at around 4pm yesterday that Sbu had pleaded guilty.
He was fined R7000 or a nine-month prison sentence. s
This is the highest speed so far recorded by traffic officials in South Africa.
The Audi brand ambassador said he was stopped by traffic officials between the Grasmere tollgate and the Golden Highway, south of Johannesburg.
Sbu apologised yesterday "for being found on the wrong side of the law".
He said he was driving from Eastern Cape when he was stopped by traffic officers.
"I was driving a comfortable car and I was not even aware that I was speeding.
"But as a responsible citizen of South Africa, I don't condone my actions," Sbu said in a statement.
Audi South Africa spokesman Meena Motiram said her company would look into their relationship with Sbu.
"We do not condone reckless driving, whether one is driving a high-powered car or not.
"The law must be obeyed," said Motiram.
Dave Johnson, of the Automobile Association's driver training department, said there needed to be more speed monitoring and safety promotion on the roads.
"Authorities are more into issuing fines and making money than safety promotion," said Johnson.
He also said that speedsters should use open race tracks to quench their adrenalin rush thirst.
"Speedsters must realise that they are not alone on the road.
"Luxury cars or not, the law still stands," said Johnson.
