Residents went on the rampage against Zimbabweans living in the Mooiplaas squatter camp, near Pretoria, on Monday night, police said.
Captain Paul Ramaloko said Mooiplaas residents were involved in a dispute with Zimbabweans they believed to be involved in armed robberies.
The residents assaulted a Zimbabwean and about 60 shacks in the area were set alight. No deaths were reported, Ramaloko said.
By 11pm the rioting had abated.
But police continue to monitor the situation.
