Kwazulu-Natal Premier Sbu Ndebele yesterday dedicated his administration to intervene in cases of women abuse and to refer such cases to the relevant authorities.
"We will act for 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day against the abuse of women and children."
He was speaking at Ixopo at an event to mark the official end of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children in the province.
He said such interventions will be carried out by the Office on the Status of Women in his department.
"It must be stated again that we want to put an end to this violence on a permanent basis.
"These acts must never be allowed to resume after the 16 Days of Activism has come to its end," said Ndebele.
He urged all in the province not to "look away" but to act against women and child abuse.
The province yesterday also closed the curtain on iNgcugce, which which is a series of commemorative events linked to the liberation, empowerment and leadership of women. It was launched in July.
iNgcugce was a controversial female regiment during the rule of King Cetshwayo in the 19th century. The women defied the king by not marrying the men he had chosen for them. This cost them their lives.
Ndebele also hit out at those who committed violent crimes and abuse against women and children under the guise of cultural, traditional and religious beliefs.
He referred to the cases of women being killed in the province because they were considered lesbians; the killing and dumping of the bodies of ten women in the Shayamoya sugar- cane fields of Umzinto and the incidents of abuse of a woman wearing trousers in T-Section in Umlazi.
The province is also popularising the white ribbon as a symbol of personal and organisational commitment to the eradication of abuse against women and children.
