ANC leadership confuses members

As the ANC prepares for its 52nd national conference, it is worrying that guerrilla-warfare tactics are being used to subvert the aspirations of the rank and file. There is no acrimony in the ANC, just a leadership contest based on grassroots nominations involving only two candidates.

As the ANC prepares for its 52nd national conference, it is worrying that guerrilla-warfare tactics are being used to subvert the aspirations of the rank and file. There is no acrimony in the ANC, just a leadership contest based on grassroots nominations involving only two candidates.

It is unfortunate that the outcome of these nominations has made way for senior members to engage in vitriolic attacks or to undermine branch members and override basic principles and policies of the ANC. This ill-disciplined action puts the entire movement in a quagmire - at the expense of the majority. It also supersedes the political interests of ANC structures.

Genuine members do not raise issues through the media or public campaigns, but within ANC structures. If one has an allegiance to the ANC, one cannot act in a manner that is detrimental to the movement.

Ordinary members cannot be expected to observe order when there is disorder at the top. This occurs because of a lack of political education in our ranks.

The situation can only be remedied by a change of leadership. It is against this background that a new leader must respond positively to the challenges facing our movement in the January 8 statement, and serve with no hidden agenda.

Morgan Phaahla, Ekurhuleni
