An accident involving three vehicles in New Canada, outside Soweto, yesterday claimed one life and left seven people seriously injured.

The accident involved a taxi, a BMW and a Toyota Corolla.

Six occupants from the taxi and the driver of the BMW survived the accident.

One of the survivors, Paulina Modise, said that the taxi was on its way from Soweto to Johannesburg when the accident happened. She said the driver of the white Corolla lost control of his car and swerved into the wrong lane, colliding with the BMW.

"The Corolla rolled a few times and collided with the BMW that then collided with our taxi.

"We are very lucky to be alive."

Modise incurred injuries to her foot.

The accident occurred next to the new RDP houses that are being built in the area.

One of the builders said: "I have been working here for about a year and I have seen between 15 and 20 accidents on this road.

"Drivers do not slow down when they get to the bend and that is what causes the accidents."

Taxi owner Ray Mhlongo said: "It is always terrible when an accident occurs. I am here to make sure that my driver and passengers are fine."

Metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said: "All the people who were injured in the accident were taken to Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital."
