Sisters at war

The decision by the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) to nominate Jacob Zuma to lead the movement has set the cat among the pigeons.

The decision by the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) to nominate Jacob Zuma to lead the movement has set the cat among the pigeons.

Yesterday, speaker of parliament Baleka Mbete blasted some of the ANCWL leaders for criticising the decision to back Zuma.

Mbete's reaction comes after some Women's League leaders, including Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and the league's deputy president, Mavivi Myakayaka-Manzini, criticised the women for not electing a woman candidate for one of the party's top six positions.

Myakayaka-Manzini said at the weekend that the league's decision to exclude a woman in their nominations did not represent the voice of women in the organisation. Mbete said during ANCWL nomination conference, everybody had voted for a man for the position of president. "So it is strange now to hear people being so angry about an outcome that did not vote for a woman when none of them actually voted for a woman as president," she said. - Sapa
