Top boxing mentor Reggie Healey has died.
The soft-spoken, no-nonsense boxing man, who was in charge of Earl Morais' illustrious career, died of natural causes on Saturday.
Morais, the former SA cruiserweight champion, was battling to come to terms with the loss of his 50-year-old mentor. He said Healey died at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg.
"We've been together for almost 20 years. It pains me to think that Reggie is gone. My career started with him and we were the best of friends," he said.
Healey's other close friend Gregory Clark, the former long-reigning SA junior middleweight king, described Healey's death is a loss to both his family and boxing.
Healey boxed professionally before honing the skills of fighters such as Morais, Trevor Gouws and Siviwe Ntshingila, to mention but a few.
He will be buried on Saturday but it is not yet known where. His death comes a week after the burial of the internationally acclaimed boxing writer, analyst and matchmaker, Leonard Neill.
