R17m grant fraud bust

A woman was arrested in connection with R17million pension fraud, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for social services and population development Meschack Radebe said on Saturday.

A woman was arrested in connection with R17million pension fraud, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for social services and population development Meschack Radebe said on Saturday.

The woman was arrested together with an official of the department and a former official on Friday.

The three women will appear in the Durban commercial court today.

These arrests come after the arrest of more than 50 people in the last two months in connection with social grant fraud, Radebe said.

Social grant fraudsters, often in collusion with corrupt public service officials, create "ghost" files that they then use to defraud the grant scheme, he said.

He said a new system used in the department was exposing fraudsters and had saved the department more than R590million since its inception in the middle of this year.

He said community members who had come forward with information were the main reason the new system has been so effective in exposing fraud. He said community members with information on fraud could either phone his offices on 033-341-9600 or their local police. - Sapa
