Two men died and one is still missing after they were swept away in flash floods, Johannesburg police and emergency services said yesterday.

Spokesman Malcolm Midgely said one man was walking in the street when he was swept away in flash floods around 5pm in Naledi, Soweto on Saturday.

"Eye witnesses informed the police who called us. We only recovered his body at 11am yesterday," Midgely said.

The deceased have not yet been identified.

In a separate incident, a man died and another is still missing after they were swept away by flash floods in Ivory Park on Saturday.

Police spokesman Superintendent Eugene Opperman, pictured, said the flash floods washed away the man and his elderly father when they tried to cross the river.

"The father's body was recovered shortly afterwards.

"Their identities are being withheld until all their next of kin have been informed," Opperman said.

Meanwhile, a 10-year-old from Meloding, Virginia, in the Free State drowned when she was swept down a sewerage trench at noon on Saturday.

Police spokesman Sergeant Malebo Khosana said: "People tried to save the girl, however, her body was found two kilometres away."
