A vacuum unit at the Durban Engen refinery caught fire yesterday sending thick black smoke several metres into the sky, clouding the Wentworth suburb.
The fire was, however, put out within minutes. This is the third fire in the area in three months.
Last month a massive petrol tank caught fire apparently after being struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm.
After yesterday, environmental activists and locals have vowed to embark on a massive wave of protests to demand the "ageing refinery" be relocated. - Mhlaba Memela
