Nomsa Zuke baked and sold cakes from her Emndeni, Soweto, home for the past four years.

But that has all changed now that Zuke, 32, and 21 other women are employed at the newly launched I Bake I Care community bakery at the Sidney Maseko Early Learning Centre in Central Western Jabavu.

The group was trained at Albany Bakeries in Germiston, Ekurhuleni. Training included food safety, baking and hygiene.

At the official opening of the bakery and graduation ceremony recently, Zuke said: "I am privileged to be part of this project. It will empower me and help my business grow."

The project was a joint initiative of Golden Cloud and Hope Worldwide, an international charity.

Senior brand manager at Golden Cloud, Sibongile Mooko said: "The programme will uplift communities by empowering women through baking."

Another graduate, Yvonne Legoale, 40, of Central Western Jabavu said: "The project will give me financial stability."
