It is that time of the year again when a lot of women go to lengths to achieve bikini bodies, or try their best to fit in that favourite dress bought for this season.

Mali Ramara, a sports nutritionist and personal trainer, says most women, especially those who feel overweight, do not think twice about taking slimming shakes and pills and hardly think about side effects linked to the products.

"The sad part is that these products work temporarily and can harm bodies for a very long time," she warns.

Ramara gives us a breakdown of various slimming products, how they work and what they do to bodies.

FAT ABSORPTION PILLS:

These pills are designed to block the absorption of fat contained in the food.

They are based on the theory that all dietary fat will add extra kilos to your body, but the reality is that in the process these products prevent the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K as well the absorption of essential fats that are important to health, says Ramara.

DIET PILLS:

These pills work by suppressing the natural appetite and are the most popular form of dieting aid.

"These pills have unpleasant side effects. They dry your mouth, cause headaches, constipation and insomnia. They produce a weight loss of only five to 10 percent and impact negatively on wellbeing," says Ramara.

STARVING YOURSELF:

This is the quickest and cheapest way of losing weight, but is temporary. When you deny yourself food, you will lose weight by losing fat, water and muscles but once you start eating, you do not only gain weight but also excess fat.

EXERCISING TOO MUCHHours and hours of exercise especially without adequate nutrition and rest will do you no good."You will remain forever tired, have increased heart rate, insomnia, lack of appetite, low immune system and susceptible to colds and flu. "The harder you exercise the more you need to eat to help your body repair and rebuild itself as well as burn fat." How to jump off the diet rollercoaster"My advice to all women is simple. Forget the diets and the obsession to be thin. Rather than focusing on the symptoms which is weight gain, you should try to focus on the cause of the symptoms," says Ramara.EXERCISING TOO MUCH
