Degrading practice

Yesterday we published a story about thousands of South African women who were being fraudulently married to foreigners without their knowledge.

In an attempt to secure South African citizenship, these foreigners obviously approach corrupt officials at the Home Affairs for help.

This malpractice has wrecked the lives of many unsuspecting, innocent victims and their credit records.

A figure of nearly 10000 marriages identified as matrimonies of convenience since 2001 might just be the tip of the iceberg. This suggests the existence of a network of civil servants and syndicates, which has gained confidence over the years while gradually eroding the system.

Home Affairs officials involved in this scam must be brought to book and the crooked foreigners deported.
