Bok sevens all fired up

It wouldn't be far fetched to say the Springbok sevens are as motivated to win their home leg in the IRB Sevens World Series at George as they are to clinch the eight-tournament series.

It wouldn't be far fetched to say the Springbok sevens are as motivated to win their home leg in the IRB Sevens World Series at George as they are to clinch the eight-tournament series.

The Boks start their challenge tomorrow morning when they play Argentina in what is a difficult pool.

The hype in George is tremendous - and the late inclusion of home boy Kabamba Floors after injury and suspension to Mzwandile Stick and Jonothan Mokuena, is in no small part the reason for the excitement.

Marius Schoeman is the other newcomer to the squad after proving in the Invitational tournament in Dubai he is again ready for international rugby.

The Springboks' chances of success hinge on better control of their possession - and the astute Paul Treu as coach is sure to have worked out how to stay out of the clutches of the aggressive tacklers such as New Zealand, Fiji and especially Samoa, who are bound to again try and exploit the lack of bulk of the South African backs in particular.

The Springboks, who led until the last minute in last year's final at George when a handling error cost them the title against New Zealand, will have to overcome Argentina, Uganda and Wales in that order in Pool C tomorrow to take the easier, seeded route to the playoffs.

New Zealand, who won the first tournament in the 2007-08 series last Saturday when they beat Fiji 31-21 in Dubai and dethroned champions South Africa, are again the favourites at George. - Sapa
