Safpu on the ball in Ngoko case

The South African Football Players Union (Safpu) executive members who recently returned from a three-day conference in Barcelona, this week successfully defended Ronald Ngoko, who was dismissed by his club, Ikapa Sporting FC.

The Union brought the case before Cape Town's Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) after Ngoko's contract was terminated by the club in November.

The CCMA and the union reached a settlement that will see Sporting FC, the National First Division affiliates, fork out R20000 to the player.

Safpu's national organiser Cappy Matutoane, who represented Ngoko, said he was happy that they have once more won a case for a member.

He said Ngoko's case of dismissal without pay after the player's contract was terminated without any valid reason, was unfair.

"But the union is very happy with the settlement because his team was unwilling to compensate the player," Matutoane said.

"As the union, we are against the manner in which certain clubs ill-treat our members, especially the foreign players. They are taking advantage of the fact that these players do not have a place to go where their complaints can be tabled in the case of being unlawfully dismissed.

"We have approached the Premier Soccer League to help us in dealing with club bosses who treat players in that manner, but have not had any joy in this regard, hence the action through the CCMA," he said.

He added that the conference they attended in Spain from November 22-26, where 40 countries were represented, was an eye-opener for them.
