The South African Karate Organisation Matsushima team left the country in high spirits yesterday to compete in the fifth European World Karate Tournament in Ukraine, on Friday and Saturday.

Shihan Peter Thage said yesterday that they have assembled a formidable squad for the prestigious competition.

"We have prepared well for the past three months for this competitive event and are hopeful that we will bring back home more than one silver this time round," said a positive Thage.

In 2004 Papi Mokoena from Sebokeng won a trophy at the World Karate Tournament held in Australia after being voted the best spirited fighter, though he lost in the quarterfinals.

Mokoena, Mduduzi Thusi and Mncendisi Mvaxa are expected to give their opponents a tough time.
