The Polokwane Municipality has unveiled a new logo for the 2010 World Cup, which they hope will also help promote the city as a tourist destination.

The Polokwane Municipality has unveiled a new logo for the 2010 World Cup, which they hope will also help promote the city as a tourist destination.

Thabo Makunyane, Polokwane executive mayor, said the new brand identity is aimed at creating an enabling environment for growth and development.

"It will also ensure that we are not on the wrong side of history by encouraging the preservation of environment, culture and heritage of Polokwane," he said.

"Focused on the theme 'naturally progressive', the initiative aims to depict what is best about the city of Polokwane, its people, location, environment and vision.

"... Market research found that the main strength of the city of Polokwane was its location, people and environment. As a provincial capital, Polokwane is centrally located and equipped to serve the region.

"[It is] an ideal gateway to other African countries and surrounded by a natural ambience with modern amenities, delivering a unique quality of life."

Elaborating on the colours and meaning of the logo, Makunyane said: "Each of the colour stripes in every variation of the logo has a particular significance."
