Major mining companies expected to be negatively affected by yesterday's one-day strike over safety concerns. The National Union of Mineworkers said more than 30000 of its members had joined the protest march in Johannesburg's centre to demand better and safer working conditions in mines.

The spokesman for Gold Field, Andrew Davidson, said about 67percent of the mines' workforce had not reported for work.

The biggest stay-away was at Kloof mine where 76percent of the workforce were absent, followed by 75percent at South Deep mine. - Staff Reporter
