Mineworker Msengi Madiba has worked in the belly of the earth extracting gold for the past 10 years.
He has witnessed many deaths at Gold Fields' Kloof Mine in Westonaria, Gauteng.
This year, five of his colleagues died in the space of four weeks at the mine.
So concerned is 48-year-old Madiba that he is planning to leave mining in the next two years.
"Most of the workforce would be dead or badly injured by the time the government completes the upcoming audit throughout the mines. I have worked so hard and have had enough," said Madiba.
Madiba joined thousands of NUM members in Johannesburg yesterday to protest against the rate of deaths at the country's 600 mines.
President Thabo Mbeki has ordered an audit into the health and safety at all the mines.
Led by NUM president Senzeni Zokwana, the mineworkers handed a memorandum at the Chamber of Mines offices.
