Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
A Tzaneen, Limpopo, man was arrested this week in connection with the alleged rape of his granddaughter, police said.
The 41-year-old man from Mokgolobotho village, outside Tzaneen, was arrested on Monday afternoon for allegedly raping his seven-year-old granddaughter.
The incident allegedly happened when the victim's mother was away. The young girl was allegedly found crying in pain by neighbours when they visited.
Ritavi police were notified and the suspect, who is the father of the victim's mother, was arrested.
He is expected to appear in the Ritavi magistrate's court today.
Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the victim was taken to a district surgeon who confirmed penetration.
"We arrested a suspect in connection with the rape," he said.
"Much as we want to believe the victim's mother might not have had reason not to trust her own father, we also want to urge parents not to leave children in the care of people who might harm them," he said.
l In another incident, police in Naboomspruit arrested three men in connection with an armed robbery that took place at about 8am on Monday at Antjiesloop, a shop in the conservative town.
