Health officials of the two cities yesterday took part in a World Bank-facilitated video-conference on HIV-Aids, sharing experiences and ways of dealing with the pandemic.
"You would think that older, wiser also means safer, which is not necessarily true," Shannon Hader said.
Speaking from Washington, she said a study done in the city released last week showed that 70 percent of new infections were among people aged between 30 and 50.
Princess Primrose Mosley, Chief Health Officer of the City of Tshwane's Aids Unit, said that while the city was targeting young people and women for HIV and Aids prevention campaigns, it also focused on other high-risk groups.
These included truck drivers, migrant workers, single-sex hostel dwellers, and those at places of entertainment such as shebeens.
About 270000 people were infected and living with the virus in Pretoria, Mosley said. - Sapa
