A fleet of Gauteng metered taxis was introduced to commuters in Sandton last week as part of the restructuring of public transport.

The brightly coloured taxis have a Gauteng provincial government sticker on the side.

Gauteng Provincial Metered Taxi Council chairman Terence Tshoaela said the taxis are run by registered operators who have legal permits issued by the Gauteng department of transport.

The taxis are part of the Metered Taxi Revitalisation Programme by the department.

The programme is aimed at formalising and improving the regulation of the industry to enable it to be part of the official public transport offering for Gauteng.

Tshoaela said: "We are pleased that the revitalisation programme has made sure that not only do we have a viable, safer and better managed industry, but we are already benefiting from a better-run service."

Commuters can call 0860-428- 8364 for a taxi service.
