Villagers in protest

Angry villagers at Masebekela, outside Komatipoort in Mpumalnga, marched against the granting of bail to five murder suspects accused of killing a Grade 11 pupil last month.

Henry Myeni, 18, of the local MC Zitha High School, was allegedly killed by the five, including two women, following a heated argument.

The furious villagers submitted a memorandum of grievances to the Tonga magistrate's court on Friday during the appearance of the suspects, who were not asked to plead and remain in custody pending their next appearance on February 8 next year.

Magistrate Christiaan Swanepoel said it was unsafe to grant the suspects bail because they would only be safe behind bars.

The suspects had allegedly assaulted the schoolboy and left him dead in the bushes.
