Rural communities paid more for staple foods than their urban area counterparts for most of this year.

This is according to November's quarterly food-price monitor released by the National Agricultural Marketing Council, which found that in January people living in rural areas had to pay, on average, R4,01 more for a 5kilogram bag of maize meal than people in urban areas.

A 700g loaf of brown bread and 700g loaf of white bread were, respectively, 3c and 12c more expensive in rural areas than in urban areas - Xolile Bhengu and Lihle Z Mtshali
