Mbeki must bow out now

I'm very concerned about the hardened attitude of President Thabo Mbeki, especially after his humiliating first-round defeat. To insist on contesting the presidency in Limpopo is stubbornness at its worst.

I'm very concerned about the hardened attitude of President Thabo Mbeki, especially after his humiliating first-round defeat. To insist on contesting the presidency in Limpopo is stubbornness at its worst.

Instead of applauding the wisdom and judgment of the ANC rank and file, and bowing out with his dignity intact, he is challenging the membership, indirectly insinuating that their choice of Jacob Zuma is naive and uninformed.

Nothing will convince Mbeki that he is wrong. The problem with him is that he is always right. Even when he unilaterally fired Zuma, Billy Masetlha, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, Vusi Pikoli and unduly defended Jackie Selebi and Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, he was still correct. When he sidelined Ace Magashule of the Free State premiership, he was still correct. This is typical behaviour of a dictator. It must be ruthlessly dealt with now. A year from now will be too late and we shall have created another Mugabe. He also stood firm on his stance on HIV-Aids. This is the kind of leadership we will never accept. We all fought to have this country where it is today. Mbeki should relinquish power and allow others to lead because he is not indispensable.
