The Massmart group launched its nationwide plan to combat hunger at schools on Monday in Pimville, Soweto.
A cheque of R1,4million was handed over to African Children's Feeding Scheme (ACFS) at the Pimville Centre by the company. The launch is the first of initiatives which will provide fully-equiped container kitchens to needy children in schools across the country.
The pilot project will be focusing on greater Gauteng.
ACFS has been operating for 60 years and now feeds 20000 Soweto children daily.
"This contribution will allow us to improve the nutritional content of the meals we are providing," said Rejoice Nkutu, executive director of ACFS.
Massmart is a group of companies which include Game Stores, Makro, CBW, Jumbo, Shield outlets, Builders Express, Warehouse and Trade Depot.
Other members of the group will contribute a percentage of their corporate social investment budget to this project.
"By feeding hungry children, we are making them to achieve more at schools," said Mark Turner, Game's marketing director.
