Miners in 'safety strike'

As one more miner dies at Angloplat's Marula Platinum in Limpopo, 20 million workers belonging to the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mines and General Workers Union (ICEM) decry the lack of safety in South African mines.

As one more miner dies at Angloplat's Marula Platinum in Limpopo, 20 million workers belonging to the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mines and General Workers Union (ICEM) decry the lack of safety in South African mines.

A national strike against lack of safety in the mines is scheduled to take place on December 4.

Announcing the date at an ICEM conference in Bangkok, Thailand, National Union of Mineworkers and ICEM president Senzeni Zokwana said: "Strike action by South African mineworkers will take place on the 4th of December to highlight the seriousness at which the matter needs to be taken by mining houses and the state."

The NUM has been organising for the industrial action since October.

More than 240000 members, mainly working for the major companies affiliated to the Chamber of Mines, are expected to join, with many others in small-scale mining companies, the protests against the lack of safety in mines.

The number of mineworkers who have died since 2000 exceeds the number of South Africans who died in the two World Wars.
